EMMANUEL “CHIVO” LUBEZKI talks the cinematography of THE REVENANT: Interview Exclusive

Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki. What can one say about Chivo? Seven time-Oscar nominated (with undoubtedly an eighth nomination around the corner this week). Two-time Oscar winner. More than 100 other awards and countless accolades the world over for his cinematographic work. He is, quite simply, not only one of the best cinematographers working today, but one of the best in film. . . And while Chivo’s storytelling through lensing and lighting has been beyond impressive and unforgettable thus far in his career (his work is THE reason why I will watch a Malick film), his crowning glory is Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s THE REVENANT.

Inspired by true events and the story of 1820’s trapper and explorer/scout Hugh Glass, THE REVENANT is a testament not only to man’s survival in the battle of man versus man, man versus nature, man versus himself, but a testament to Chivo Lubezki.

Shot with all natural light under some of the most difficult conditions Mother Nature has to offer, THE REVENANT is a visual stunner, with each image more powerful, more beautiful than the last.

On December 17, 2015, film critic debbie elias sat down with Chivo for this exclusive interview. Take a listen now to what Chivo had to say about THE REVENANT. . .
